World Of Warcraft Loses 100,000 Subscribers

None

If any other MMO lost 100,000 players, they would be getting ready to shutter their windows, but Blizzard doesn’t seem to be all that worried.

In yesterday’s conference call with investors, Blizzard chief Mike Morhaime mentioned that, although World of Warcraft has shed over 100,000 subscribers, the game is still doing quite well. In fact, it’s still significantly larger than any other MMO, boasting 10.2 million subscribers worldwide.

Star Wars: The Old Republic has probably been the biggest factor in WoW’s decline, although it’s not nearly as influential as you might think. Many SWTOR players are still riding out their first free month of the sci-fi MMO, so they probably haven’t made their final decision about which game to latch on to just yet. The Old Republic currently boasts about 1.7 million subscribers, but it’s still in its infancy, so it’s probably too early to make any real judgments.

Either way, World of Warcraft probably isn’t going anywhere any time soon. And, lets not forget, that they still have the option to adopt a free-to-play model if things start to get really bad.
