WoW Is Still Losing Subscribers

WoW Is Still Losing Subscribers

None

It’s starting to feel like World Of Warcraft’s reign of dominance might be coming to an end in the relatively near future. Don’t get me wrong, Blizzard still has 10.3 million subscribers, so they’re doing just fine. But they’ve reportedly lost 800,000 subscribers since August.

Blizzard’s CEO Mike Morhaime was quick to point out that WoW is still “by far the most popular subscription-based MMO in the world,” even though the company lost a large chunk of subscribers from the quickly-shrinking Chinese market. But Morhaime still remains confident. It’s still “one of the most popular online games in China,” he said.

Last month, during BlizzCon, the company announced WoW’s 4th expansion pack. Mists of Pandaria is a panda-bear-centric add-on that increases the level cap and adds a few new perks. But it’s still a ways off, so players will have to make do with the upcoming 4.3 update until it’s released.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that subscription rates are starting to decline. The game’s seven-year anniversary was this month, so the technology is showing its age. And many of the hardcore players are aging out of gaming altogether. But rest assured, Blizzard Entertainment is still going to have enough cash to pay their electric bill for a while longer.
