The Week in Review news piece summarizes and highlights the most important gaming related news and rumors over the past week. This weekly article will keep you plugged in and in-tune.

Four key bits of gaming news hit the Internet this week. First, Asteroids finally had its legendary high score tally of 41,336,440 (set by Scott Safran in 1982) broken by Seattle locksmith, John McAllister. Mr. McAllister broke the record at 10:18 PM PT on April 5, 2010 with a final score of 41,338,740 – just 2300 points beyond the former record, which was previously the longest-standing video game high score of all-time. It took John McAllister 58 hours of straight gaming to set the feat. His initials of ELF will be made official after a third-party review is made of the hardware he was playing on.

Next up, a number of rumored details came concerning Gears of War 3, which later in the week was accidentally confirmed by an advert on Xbox LIVE. According to U.S. publishing source cited by Edge Online, Gears Of War 3 will introduce several new mechanics including a revamped cover system, burrowing torpedoes, mech suits, and underwater levels.

Also, Apple revealed details concerning iPhone OS 4.0, which is set to launch for the iPhone and iPod Touch this summer. While multitasking and unified advertising platform may be interesting, we were most excited by GameCenter; an online service, much like Xbox LIVE, Steam, and the PlayStation Network, for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The service will bring with it leaderboards, achievements, multiplayer matching, friends lists, and party/game invites. The newly-launched iPad will not get any of the OS 4.0 features until fall of 2010.

Finally, Activision filed a counter-suit against former Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella. Activision charged the development duo with delaying pre-production of Modern Warfare 3, with being subversive in a bid to wrest Infinity Ward’s best talents away from Activision in order to start their own company, and finally for turning coat and heading over to EA to hawk their development wares.
