Asteroids High Score Finally Bested

None

Asteroids, the legendary arcade shooter from 1979, has finally had its mythical high score tally of 41,336,440 (set by Scott Safran in 1982) broken.

The new record holder? Seattle locksmith John McAllister. The insane gamer broke the record on 10:18 PM PT on April 5, 2010 with a final score of 41,338,740 – that’s just 2300 points more than Safran’s record, which was previously the longest-standing video game high score of all-time.

It’s not difficult to understand why the game’s record stood for so long; it took McAllister 58 straight hours to put up the high score – a score he graced with the initials ELF. If you’re wondering about the validity of the record, it is reported that the score was put up on a vintage Asteroids arcade cabinet from 1979.
