The Week in Review & Rumor Round-up: Nintendo Dropping Hints, Google Wasting Our Time, GameStop Moving Forward, and More!

The Week in Review news piece summarizes and highlights the most important gaming related news and rumors over the past week. This weekly article will keep you plugged in and in-tune.

Nintendo got the week started by filed for a several trademark protections for both the DS and 3DS. Nintendo registered trademarks including DS Sound, DS Name Card, DS Magazine, DSMovie, DSCamera, DSCinema, DSMessage, DSMusic, and for DSAlbum, as well as for other trademarks including Nintendo 3DS, N3DS, 3DSPlay, and 3DSWare. It seems more likely that their next handheld will in fact use 3DS rather than replacing the widely used, preliminary name.

Square Enix seems to be happy with its move to multi-platform Final Fantasy, as early rumblings point to Final Fantasy Versus XIII coming to Xbox 360 as well. This hasn’t been officially confirmed by Square Enix, but CEO Yoichi Wada has admitted that it’s a sales strategy they were mulling over.

Recently, EA announced that they would be implementing a $10 online access fee for gamers who pick up their sports games used and with to get online. Apparently, Ubisoft has been taking note of the strategy and has decided to take similar steps in order to ensure the company gets a chunk of the secondary games market.

Despite these kind of pressures from publishers, GameStop has been posting record sales. The other day GameStop reported that they generated $2.08 billion in just a three-month period; that’s the largest non-Holiday sales period on record. GameStop is also looking toward the future; announcing that they will start selling DLC and bonus add-ons at their stores soon.

Finally, in celebration of the Pac-Man’s 30th birthday, an interactive Google Doodle featuring the legendary game has been posted on Google’s main page and will be playable for the next day or so. The game takes a few seconds to load, but it plays right in your favorite browser, allows for co-op play, and is complete with music, life tallies, ghost behavior, and scoring.
