Barbarian II: The Dungeon of Drax is a 1988 beat-’em-up adventure game developed and published by Palace Software. The game was released on various platforms including Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, MS-DOS, and ZX Spectrum.

Reviewers were split over Barbarian II: The Dungeon of Drax. The game took a new direction from the original title, with praise going to its adventure elements. However, the stripped-back combat system compared to the first game came in for considerable criticism.

The entirety of Barbarian II: The Dungeon of Drax is played via a single-player story mode, taking place across four stages: wasteland, caves, dungeon, and the inner sanctum. You use the arrow keys or joystick to move one of two playable characters through these levels, each of which has a series of monsters and traps to overcome and items to pick up. This was a new approach for the series, after the original game took place in one single arena.

The main threat throughout the game is the creatures that inhabit each room. Combat in this game is stripped back when compared to the original, with fewer moves to choose from. This was a big disappointment for many, with combat being crucial to the gameplay loop. Regardless, the one-hit-kill neck chop decapitations were still there, a series staple.

With Barbarian II: The Dungeon of Drax taking on an adventure game formula, the game has a little more time to devote to its story. Looking back at Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior, we described the game’s story as “the very definition of paper-thin.” While the sequel is no masterpiece in this regard, it’s certainly a lot better.

The main characters are the same as in the original game, with their roles changed a little this time around.

• Barbarian: The titular barbarian is one of two playable characters. In this game, he’s armed with a battleaxe, traveling to Drax’s dungeon to end the wizard’s life for good.
• Princess Mariana: No longer a damsel in distress as per the previous game, Princess Mariana is a playable character this time around. Armed with a sword, Mariana looks to take her revenge on the wizard, Drax.
• Drax: After being defeated in the first game, Drax has retreated to his dungeon. This antagonist must remain in hiding while his adversaries seek their revenge.

Barbarian II: The Dungeon of Drax Titles in the Series

The Barbarian series was perhaps more known for its controversial marketing campaign than the product itself. For both the original game and its sequel, Palace Software hired topless model Maria Whittaker to pose on the front covers. This resulted in a ton of controversy from certain groups, but in the end, it was a winning strategy. In this case, all publicity was good publicity, with both games being strong sellers for Palace Software.

After the release of the second game, Palace Software was purchased by Titus Software, and plans for a third game were canned. The buyer did eventually use the Barbarian name for a 2002 title, although its gameplay is totally disconnected from everything that came prior.

Nowadays, the rights for the series are now owned by Interplay Entertainment. This has been the case for nearly two decades now, and the company hasn’t done anything with the name. Because of this, we don’t expect to see a new Barbarian game any time soon, and likely ever.

Unfortunately, Barbarian II: The Dungeon of Drax suffers the exact same fate as its predecessor when it comes to cheat codes. In this game, they simply don’t exist. Given the number of platforms the game exists on, it’s surprising that there was never any found for the game, if they even exist.

Like the original, Barbarian II: The Dungeon of Drax has a small but strong cult following. Even with this in mind, there aren’t any third-party cheats or mods for the game either, ruling out another common way to cheat.
