SEGA has announced that developers The Creative Assembly are working on the latest installment in its Total War franchise, Total War: Rome II, to be released next year for PC.

A sequel to 2004’s critically-acclaimed Rome: Total War, Rome II is said to feature an “expansive turn-based campaign” and “large, cinematic real-time battles.” The game will be the largest Total War title yet, as the budget and sheer manpower behind the game is bigger than any other game in the series.

As for plot details, SEGA says Total War: Rome II will see players at the head of the Roman army, forced to struggle with the oft-dubious machinations of the superpower’s senate, where trust is hard to come by. Players will be able to shape their personal Roman empire as they see fit, turning it into an empire, republic, or autocracy as they go along.

“Our games have always encompassed a grand vision,” creative director Mike Simpson said. “But we’re now pushing that vision at both ends of the spectrum. From the immense reach of the sandbox campaign right down to the human-level drama of a single warrior on the battlefield, we’re aiming for an unprecedented level of detail and scale.”

Creative Assembly brand director Rob Bartholomew promises Total War: Rome II is “ready to set another benchmark in gaming.” Whether or not his company backs up that claim will just have to wait, though, until the strategy game launches sometime next year.
