Ubisoft Criticized for Supposed Heroes of Might & Magic III: HD Edition False Advertising

Assassin’s Creed developer, Ubisoft, has announced that it’ll be re-releasing the turn-based strategy game Heroes of Might & Magic III with high definition textures on PC and tablets in late-January.

This latest version of the game is said to be compatible with Steam, and it will also include multiplayer features as well. On the tablet front, the game will be releasing for the first time on Android and iOS devices. The game’s release marks its 15th anniversary, as well as the franchise’s 20th anniversary, too.

However, the announcement has received a mixed reception, as criticism regarding the advertisement for Heroes of Might & Magic III: HD Edition has been floating around, accusing the developer of deliberately decreasing the quality of the game’s original in-game graphics to make the graphics of the HD version of the game look superior by comparison.

It’s believed by some that the poorer quality comparisons are actually versions of the sprites featured in the original game, which look heavily pixelated as a result when blown up to fit a resolution they weren’t designed for.

Even though Heroes of Might & Magic III: HD Edition does indeed feature higher resolution textures compared, there are others who believe that there isn’t actually foul play at work, as was a video later published which demonstrated how the original game’s sprites were updated. This video has been embedded below.

As Heroes fans ourselves, we know that nothing we could have done on this title would have surpassed the original game and this never has been our intention since the beginning of this project, ” Ubisoft explained in its official announcement.

Our objective with HoMM3: HD Edition is to offer a new way to experience Heroes 3 on iOS and Android, alone or with friends thanks to the acclaimed hotseat mode (no more boring long train journeys!). To also please our PC fans we have worked on a Steamworks version!

The offending image that caused the initially controversy is now believed by some to be fake. We’ll bring you more news on Heroes of Might & Magic III: HD Edition should further information reach our ears.
