UPDATE: Vita’s Price Drops In Japan

None

In the United States, even if a mass-produced product is selling relatively poorly, it’s still unlikely that the price will drop at retail until the manufacturer deems it so. Japan, it would appear, has no such qualms about adjusting the sticker-price to meet demand. After last week’s less-than-stellar Vita sales , during which the device dropped from a strong first week of over 325,000 units to around 72,000 and was dwarfed by the 3DS (at 482,000), Japanese retailers are cutting the price of the less popular 3G model of the handheld by as much as 20 percent.

It may seem like an inauspicious start for the Vita, but it’s worth remembering that the 3DS, too, had issues in its first months, leading to an official price cut of almost 33 percent before the six month mark. Further, the 3DS’ holiday line-up is absurdly strong, with a Mario platformer, a Mario Kart game and a Monster Hunter entry all sitting in the top four of overall sales for the week. We’ll see what happens when the must-have titles start coming for the Vita.
