Valve Apologizes

Valve Apologizes

None

In the past two weeks, over 12,000 Modern Warfare 2 players have had their Steam accounts banned by Valve’s anti-cheating software. While we may all suspect that other players are cheating every time we die in-game, these numbers still seem to be incredibly high for such a small period of time. That is because they are, and Valve has officially stepped up to apologize for the error.

According to Gamespot, Valve president Gabe Newell has stated “This was our mistake, and I apologize for any frustration or angst it may have caused you,” in emails to those players who were wrongfully banned. Newell also went on to explain the mishap saying “The problem was that Steam would fail a signature check between the disk version of a DLL and a latent memory version. This was caused by a combination of conditions occurring while Steam was updating the disk image of a game. This wasn’t a game-specific mistake. Steam allows us to manage and reverse these erroneous bans (about 12,000 erroneous bans over two weeks).”

To further make up for the inconvenience, these unfortunate players will also be receiving a free copy of Left 4 Dead 2. A nice gesture, but will it be enough to dispel the hard feelings caused by these faulty bans?
