Steam Hackers Nabbing Credit Card Information?

Steam Hackers Nabbing Credit Card Information?

None

Many Steam users found a slightly disturbing email in their inbox yesterday afternoon. Valve was forced to notify the community that much of their personal information, including encrypted credit card information, has been compromised after hacker breached Steams security.

Earlier this week, hackers broke into and vandalized the Steam forums . At the time, Valve didn’t seem to be worried that any vital information had been compromised. However, after a few days of investigation, the company has discovered that the intruders have also accessed a Steam database, which is entirely separate from the forums.

We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked,” said Valve’s Gabe Newell. “We are still investigating.”

Newell also apologized for the situation and encouraged players to change their passwords on their steam accounts, as well as any outside services that share the same password/email combination.

Valve has not yet decided to temporarily shut the service down, but as new information starts to surface, who knows what will happen.
