Epic, Bethesda, Latest In Rash Of Hacks

None

More developments in the rash of gaming company hacks in the wake of the April PSN intrusion leave both Epic Games and Bethesda Software compromised.

A letter from Epic games sent to its customers warns that “email addresses and encrypted passwords” may have been taken, when the web site and forums were hacked. They were brought back up after a brief downtime, and all user passwords were reset. Epic also informed its customers that the Unreal Developer Network was not compromised and, as no Epic websites either request or store financial data, none was at risk.

In a similar hack over the weekend, intruders may have gained access to Bethesda’s user names, email addresses and passwords. The publisher has advised all users to change their passwords immediately, but assures customers that no financial data or credit card information was obtained.

Though most likely inspired by—and possibly related to—the PSN intrusion in April, this recent rash of hacks that began with an attack on Nintendo’s website has been far more rapid, moving from company to company over a matter of days, as opposed to the month-long silence after the PSN attack.
