Square Enix Site Breached

Square Enix Site Breached

None

In a statement released earlier today, Square Enix announced that it has joined the ranks of game companies who have had their websites infiltrated by an outside party. Specifically, in this case, it is the Square Enix Members website that has been hacked, which may contain some personal information on members, but does not, they assert, hold credit card information.

While the latter is good news, Square Enix has also stated that, until they complete their investigation and implement countermeasures, the website will remain down. Their current estimate has this down-time pegged at a few days, though it’s worth noting that the service was actually suspended as of Monday, December 12 at 10PM PST.

This is hardly the first time in history hackers have had the tools necessary to breach game companies’ servers. Why is it that, these last few months, there has been such a tremendous rash of intrusions? Could it be that the tools to detect these attacks are just now becoming advanced enough to tell when they happen? Is there a group or groups out there with a vendetta? A league of bitter gamers?
