Square Enix’s Gameglobe Promises Simple, Free Game Creation

None

Square Enix has had a rather subdued presence at E3 this year, but some of the company’s subsidiaries have brought interesting projects along. One such project is Gameglobe, a project that hopes to bring simple action-adventure game creation tools to hopeful game makers via the web. Designed by Danish studio Hapti.co, the Gameglobe system is creating quite a bit of buzz at the show.

The basics of Gameglobe are straightforward, allowing the player to “paint” game worlds and levels within a web browser, yet the trailer shows some impressive-looking areas that were created using these tools. Buildings and vehicles can be dragged and dropped into the world, as can objects like doors and switches. In order to do something like connecting a switch to trap or making a key that opens a door, the objects simply need to be connected together using Gameglobe’s interface, no programming required.

Gameglobe currently has three prop styles: jungle, pirate, and colonial, which can be mixed up in the player desires. The company plans to add more styles according to requests by the Gameglobe community. There will also be plenty of ready-made action-adventure games provided to people who are more interested in playing than creating. The entire experience is said to be free-to-play, but there’s no information on how it will be monetized. There’s also no release date for Gameglobe, but interested gamers can sign up for the newsletter and beta at the official website .
