Valve Launches Redesigned Steam Store

Valve Launches Redesigned Steam Store

If you’ve loaded up Steam in the past couple of days, you may have noticed some changes to the way it looks. Valve has overhauled the Steam storefront to better integrate the new features they have been rolling out over the course of the year. This update should make it easier to find the kind of games you want and hide the games you’re less interested in.

The update prioritizes the end user’s preferences, displaying informative recommendations based on the games you enjoy and easy access to titles on sale. A noteworthy addition is the new “edit your preferences” button displayed in the upper-right corner of every game’s cover image. You can click this button to either add the game to your wish list or indicate your disinterest; Steam then takes these preferences into account when showing you new titles. For example, if I continually tell Steam that I’m not interested in seeing football games (which is true), I won’t have to see them clogging up my front page, and can instead focus on browsing through genres I care about.

You’ll also be able to see your friends’ activity at a glance, which better integrates the storefront into the community features users have come to expect. Curator recommendations have received a boost in visibility, as have easy links to the most common destinations within the store. You’ll also see a feed of the most recently updated titles in your library. Neat! Here’s hoping the annual Winter Sale doesn’t utterly annihilate my meager savings.
