Valve Lends A Hand To The Movie Industry

Valve Lends A Hand To The Movie Industry

None

Shane Acker, the man behind hit animated film 9 , is teaming up with Valve on his next movie. Hold on here, don’t get excited about some sort of Half-Life movie interpretation. Acker isn’t teaming with Valve on the plot, just the animation technology.

The movie is called Deep , and it takes place in a post-apocalyptic world devastated by World War III. (Acker seems to really love his post-apocalyptic settings, doesn’t he?) In this world, survivors take shelter undersea in sunken ships and submarines. The story follows Sullivan, the captain of a sub, who makes contact with an alien race who might have the power to save the Earth… but at what cost?

Acker is teaming up with Valve in order to use tools based on the Source engine. Using these will allow him to continue movie production on his tiny budget of $18.7 million dollars. Hopefully this doesn’t mean that the movie will have a Machinima look to it.

Using video game technology to help develop movies is a great push forward for the games as art movement. Take that, Roger Ebert!
