Week in Review: Itagaki Resigns, New Insomniac Studio, Vader Apprentice to Soulcalibur IV, and more!

Team Ninja leader, Tomonobu Itagaki, released a letter of resignation from Tecmo to the public on Tuesday. The letter announced that he will not only be leaving Tecmo, but has in fact filed suit against the company and the president, Yoshimi Yosuda, for failure to pay bonuses tagged to him for Dead or Alive, and for “unreasonable and disingenuous statements” made. According to an analyst at Wedbush Morgan Securities, an SEC filing by Activision states the company plans on releasing the Metallica specific Guitar Hero title in their fiscal year of 2009 .

Sony has penned a deal with IGA Worldwide to place ads in PS3 titles. It is Sony’s intention that any approved third party will be allowed to begin advertising in-game. Sony’s hope is that in-game ads will create massive amounts of revenue, and they will also provide for a more realistic gaming experience.

North Carolina is getting a brand new development studio from Insomniac Games. The new studio will open in January 2009 and, according to Wired, “will have a staff of 25-30 developers, and be headed by current Insomniac art director Chad Dezern.” Furthermore, in an interview with CEO Ted Price, Gamasutra found out that the studio will be based in Raleigh-Durham, will be made of almost an entirely new set of developers, will provide an attractive alternative to living on the West Coast, and will be largely independent; supposedly the Burbank and Raleigh-Durham studios will work on separate projects.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has broken through the 10 million copies sold mark. This firmly places the shooter as one of gaming’s elite titles.

Four titles, one of which is unconfirmed, were announced for the Nintendo Wii this week. The titles include Naruto: Clash of Ninja Revolution 2, Rune Factory Frontier, Tenchu 4, and Castlevania: Curse of Darkness. Click HERE to see more information on each announced game.

2K Sports announced on Friday that 11-time NBA All-Star and 2008 Defensive Player of the Year Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics will be featured as the cover athlete and spokesman for NBA 2K9.

Age of Conan will pass the astounding “One Million Copies Shipped” milestone, in less than three weeks after the launch of the game. In the US, Age of Conan has a strong # 1 chart position and is now moving past the 500.000 shipped mark. Meanwhile, the attention for the game is growing across the globe, with over 8 million unique visitors from over 200 countries to the Age of Conan websites so far in 2008.

Namco Bandai Games America Inc. announced Friday that the Secret Apprentice from LucasArts’ Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will be a guest character in Soulcalibur IV. He will be a playable character on both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. So, all you’ll have to worry about is deciding between Vader or Yoda.
