The Super Smash Bros fighter ballot results are in, and we have our winner. Bayonetta, the gun toting witch with gaming’s best hair won it all. She’s going to come to the game in 2015, rounding out the character roster. Know what? She was the right choice.
I know, that may sound misguided. There are a lot of great Nintendo characters out there. Many people deserved to make it into Super Smash Bros . But none deserved the honor more than Platinum Games’ heroine, and people need to understand why.
First of all, Bayonetta is a Nintendo icon now. Whether people like it or not, she’s a major force for the Nintendo Wii U. It’s the only current generation console to get Bayonetta 2 , and Platinum Games has partnered with Nintendo on a lot of games for the system. It feels right that she receive some attention for her contribution to the sustem’s library. As an exclusive character, she earned that right.
She’ll also be a good fit for the fighting game. Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 have combo-based systems. People are already accustomed to elaborate button presses to pull off impressive attacks. It means she’ll transition well to Super Smash Bros .
Bayonetta also means another ranged fighter has entered the fray. There aren’t as many of them in Super Smash Bros . People deserve an alternative to Samus, Mega Man, Robin, and Pit. That her Bullet Arts will tie into combos and can add to any attack increases her versatility.
Her inclusion also adds a little more weight to Super Smash Bros. It’s a cartoonish title, with lots of fanciful, bright, and perhaps even childish characters. Bringing in someone from a “Mature” rated game is a big deal. Especially since Nintendo isn’t toning down her sex appeal. She’ll have a longer taunt than other characters, one that could be called flirtaious, and she’s still summoning her demons for attacks. It pushes some boundaries in a game that usually plays things safe.
Bayonetta’s Super Smash Bros. appearance is a boon. It’ll benefit players to see her facing off against the other, classic competitors. Not only does it honor another Wii U exclusive game, but it shows Nintendo is okay with more mature content and how easily characters can transition from their original titles into the fighter.
