It’s a launch horror story the likes of which we’d hoped never to see. Upon bringing their newly minted consoles home from the store, gamers plugging them into their TVs and connected them to the internet to discover that Nintendo had issued a day one update for the console. In total, the update runs approximately 5GB, taking up well over half of the basic unit’s 8GB hard drive (which only features 7.2GB of real, available storage to begin with).
I doesn’t end there, though: this update, which can take multiple hours to download and install, has a reported tendency to brick one’s console if it is in some manner interrupted during the download, whether by a loss of internet connectivity or power to the Wii U. Gamers who were afflicted by this scenario have expressed their less-than-thrilled sentiments through forums across the internet and via scathing posts on Twitter.
As of yet, there is no word on how Nintendo intends to approach the bricked consoles, or whether this update will be included with the console in future shipments of the hardware.
