Will Marvel Feature Female Leads Anytime Soon?

Will Marvel Feature Female Leads Anytime Soon?

If there is one place that girl-power is more prevalent than any other, it’s certainly in the comic book realm. While we see countless strong females in lead rolls in our graphic novels, some wonder why they’ve not graced the silver screen in such a role.

Over the weekend, Marvel President Kevin Feige had this to say regarding the lack of starring heroines, and how he hopes to change that with future Marvel films. “I think it comes down to timing, which is what I’ve sort of always said, and it comes down to us being able to tell the right story. I very much believe in doing it. I very much believe that it’s unfair to say, ‘People don’t want to see movies with female heroes,’ then list five movies that were not very good, therefore, people didn’t go to the movies because they weren’t good movies, versus because they were female leads. And they don’t mention ‘ Hunger Games ,’ ‘ Frozen ,’ ‘ Divergent .’ You can go back to ‘ Kill Bill ’ or ‘ Aliens .’ These are all female-led movies. It can certainly be done. I hope we do it sooner rather than later.” Says Feige

While characters like Black Widow (played by Scarlet Johansson) have certainly become popular in recent years, where does a female like her fit into a possible stand-alone project? Feige suggests that with an already packed schedule, finding a place to spin-off a new movie would be tricky. “…we find ourselves in the very strange position of managing more franchises than most people have… we have three for 2017… it does mean you have to put one franchise on hold for three or four years in order to introduce a new one…Those are the kinds of chess matches we’re playing right now.” he states.

Marvel’s latest epic Guardians of the Galaxy is doing very well, setting box office records for August (including the biggest Thursday opening of 2014).
