Will Nintendo Dominate E3 This Year?

Will Nintendo Dominate E3 This Year?

June is fast approaching, which means speculation has begun about one of gaming’s biggest events. I’m talking about E3 2017. While it may be a bit early to gossip about the convention, companies certainly aren’t holding back. Just recently, Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s Chief Operating Officer, spoke to Fox News about E3. During the conversation, he noted that the company was going to “have a big E3 this year” that covered the 3DS and the Switch.

This is quite a change in pace from last year. At E3 2016, Nintendo was all about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild . The whole booth was dedicated to the game, with tons of demo stations, interactive props, and even an initial viewing experience inspired by the game’s shrines. It was beautiful, but ultra focused. Such a showing kept Nintendo from excelling at E3 in the same way Sony and Microsoft, with their huge booths and variety of games, did. Now, with this tease of things to come, it sounds like Nintendo could be in a position to win E3 2017.

Nintendo’s Switch is full of potential going into E3. We already know about some huge titles that will be arriving in 2017. Splatoon 2, Arms, Ultra Street Fighter 2: The Final Challengers, Fire Emblem Warriors, Skyrim, Super Mario Odyssey, and even Xenoblade Chronicles 2 are all on the horizon. We have all these games we know are coming. Each one is incredibly exciting. Not to mention E3 2017 will bring a bevy of even more Switch announcements. Nintendo knows this is its chance to sell the Switch on skeptics, and it’ll rise to the occasion.

And then there’s the 3DS. It happens to be one of the best selling systems on the market right now. This is a system that’s in its prime, with a slew of amazing games already available and more on the way. E3 2017 is going to be prime time for Nintendo to speak up about titles like Ever Oasis, Lady Layton: The Millionaire Ariadone’s Conspiracy, Culdcept Revolt, RPG Maker Fes, the new Pikmin game, and prospective titles like Radiant Historia and Shin Megami Tensei: Deep Strange Journey . While the handheld may be reaching the end of its run, it isn’t dead yet. There’s still plenty of good stuff ahead.

Sony’s in a rather cozy place for E3 2017. The PlayStation 4 Pro and PlayStation VR are established, so there’s no new tech for people to get excited about. There aren’t as many exclusive IPs on the horizon for the system. We should learn more about Death Stranding, Gran Turismo Sport, God of War, and Detroit: Become Human , but it’s uncertain if any of these games will actually materialize in 2017 and be playable at the event. Sony’s both is going to be good and exciting, of course, but it could be a more relaxed year for the company. They may coast.

Will Nintendo Dominate E3 This Year?

Microsoft could have its moment. E3 2017 is when we should be hearing everything there is to know about Project Scorpio, the Xbox One equivalent of the PlayStation 4 Pro. But, has the company already missed its moment on it? The standard console is solid, but the library is lacking exclusives. We have no idea what could be coming to the system, which makes it unlikely anything major will appear this year. I don’t know about you, but I have this fear that there could be nothing there that really makes upgrading worthwhile. Especially since the PlayStation 4 Pro came, went, and didn’t cause any sort of technological revolution along the way.

Nintendo is in a prime position to be the belle of the ball at E3 2017. It has a new system that has all sorts of exciting exclusives waiting in the wings. It has an old favorite console that has a few good games left in it. There’s everything to prove here, while Sony approaches a year where it might just kick back and relax and Microsoft still hasn’t given us anything solid to get excited about. This could be a good year to support the Switch and 3DS.
