Xbox One May Let You Share Games Digitally

Sharing your digital releases with friends and family could be a very real possibility in the next gen!

Major Nelson recently responded to a reddit post when one user asked: “Can I buy a game and gift it to a friend digitally?” In response, Nelson said: “Great feature we’d like to add in someday, but it won’t be there at launch.”

One of the biggest shifts we’ve seen in gaming lately is the distribution system of the games. More and more titles are becoming available on both disc-based formats and as a digital download simultaneously. Some titles bypass the physical media release altogether and go directly to the online marketplaces. With this shift, it’s interesting to see how “digitally gifting” titles will play into how the games are distributed. Of course, the closer we get to an entirely digital system the more prevalent piracy will become (but that’s a can of worms we won’t open here).

In the meantime, Microsoft has their Games with Gold plan in full swing that offers free copies of older digital releases to current (and new) Xbox Live subscribers. The latest title currently available is Halo 3 , with a new release coming on the 1 st and 16 th of each month.
