This year’s E3 may turn out to be a relatively quiet one. Activision has just published a blog post on its official website saying the following: “In June, we’re going to be at E3 showcasing gameplay from Infinity Ward’s ambitious new game. We’re looking forward to sharing exciting new details about the next great Call of Duty game in partnership with our friends at PlayStation. We’re proud to be participating in this premier video game event, but won’t have an Activision booth on the show floor.”
So basically, Acitivision is going to chill in a corner of Sony’s booth, but didn’t find it worth it to pay for booth space of its own. Considering the fact that the Destiny sequel won’t be launching until next year, and assuming that they just don’t have all of the details ready to reveal, this makes sense. Booth space is more expensive than you think. You pay a flat fee for the space itself, premiums depending on the equipment you’re setting up, fees to park all of your transportation, and on top of all of that you have to staff the thing. I grew up the son of a corporate event planner, and I know for a fact that unless you really have something worth showing off, you don’t spend money on space at a show as big as E3.
EA will be skipping E3 this year as well, opting instead to host its own three-day event nearby at Club Nokia June 12-14. EA will also be holding a pre-E3 keynote on June 12. Make no mistake, though. E3 will still be a huge show, and will play host to most of the big boys you look forward to hearing from, including Bethesda, which stole the show last year.
