All Pokémon Starters by Generation

With every new Pokémon game comes a new set of starters for you to choose from. When starting these games, it can be hard to choose which one you want as your first team member. While I can’t make up your mind for you, I can help. Just for you, and nobody else, here’s a list of each starter Pokémon for each generation. As of the time of this article, there are only nine generations of Pokémon to go off of.  

Gen 1

Generation 1 takes place in the Kanto Region. The games released for this generation are Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue, Pokémon Yellow, and Pokémon Green. The original release of the games was on September 28, 1998. Something special about this lineup is that Pokémon Yellow is the only game where the starter isn’t either a water, fire, or grass-type Pokémon. In Pokémon Yellow, you get to have Pikachu as your starter Pokémon.  

Squirtle

Squirtle, the “Tiny Turtle Pokémon”, is the water-type starter for this generation. They are weak to grass and electric type Pokémon. As they level up they will evolve into Wartortle and then Blastoise. 

Charmander

Charmander, the “Lizard Pokémon”, is the fire-type starter in generation one. This Pokémon is weak to water, rock, and ground type Pokémon. When they reach the proper level they will evolve into Charmeleon and then, eventually, they will evolve into Charizard.  

Bulbasaur

Bulbasaur, the “Seed Pokémon”, is the grass-type Pokémon in the lineup. This little guy is weak to fire, psychic, flying, and ice-type Pokémon. They will eventually evolve into Ivysaur and then Venusaur.  

Pikachu

Pikachu, the “Mouse Pokémon”, is the only electric type Pokémon that is a starter. They are only weak to ground type Pokémon. Pikachu is the second evolution of their line (evolved from Pichu) and can evolve into Raichu. Unless your Pikachu is Ash Ketchams that is.  

Gen 2

The second generation of Pokémon takes place in the Johto Region. The games in this region are Pokémon Silver, Pokémon Gold, and, later, Pokémon Crystal. The original release of this game happened on December 14, 2000.   

Totodile

Cyndaquil, the “Fire Mouse Pokémon”, is the fire-type Pokémon in this lineup. This sweet baby is sadly weak to rock, ground, and fire-type Pokémon. Cyndaquil will evolve into Quilava and then Typhlosion.  

Chikorita

Chikorita, the “Leaf Pokémon”, is the grass-type Pokémon of the group. They are weak to poison, bug, flying, fire, and ice-type Pokémon. This Pokémon turns into Bayleaf and then will change to Meganium later.    

Gen 3

Generation 3 takes place in the Hoen region. The games that take place here are Pokémon Ruby, Pokémon Sapphire, Pokémon Emerald, and then the remakes of Pokémon Omega Ruby and  Pokémon Alpha Sapphire. This game was originally released on November 21, 2002.

Mudkip

Torchic

Treeko

Treecko, the “Wood Gecko Pokémon”, is a grass-type Pokémon in the Hoenn Region. They are weak to bug, flying, fire, poison, and, un-shockingly, ice-type Pokémon. This little guy will evolve into Grovyle, who will then eventually evolve into Sceptile.   

Gen 4

The Sinnoh Region is where Generation 4 Pokémon are introduced. The games released in this generation are Pokémon Diamond, Pokémon Pearl, Pokémon Platinum, and the remakes Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl. The first release of this game was on September 28, 2006.

Turtwig, the “Tiny Leaf Pokémon”, is the grass-type starter in the Sinnoh region. They happen to be weak against poison, fire, flying, ice, and even bug-type Pokémon. The tiny leaf will eventually evolve into Grotle, then followed by Torterra.  

Gen 5

Generation 5 takes place in the Unova region in the Pokémon Universe. The games that take place here are Pokémon Black, and Pokémon White, along with their sequels Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2. The initial release of Pokémon Black and Pokémon White was on September 18, 2010. 

Oshawott

Tepig

Gen 6

Kalos is the Generation 6 region in Pokémon, The games that were released with these starters are Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. These games were released on October 12, 2013.

Froakie

Gen 7

The seventh generation of Pokémon takes place in the Alola Region. Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, along with Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, come with these starter Pokémon. The initial release of these games was on November 18, 2016.   

Popplio

Rowlet

Gen 8

Next up we have generation 8, and it takes place in the Galar region. Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield are the games whose story takes place in this region. They were both initially released on November 15, 2019.  

Sobble

Lastly, the most recent generation takes place in the Paldea region. Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet are the games that have these starters. These games were released on November 18, 2022. 

Quaxly
