An End To Australian Censorship

An End To Australian Censorship

None

The government-enforced content rating system in Australia is an infamous beast within the gaming world, preventing games with content thought to be objectionable to between the ages of fifteen and eighteen from being released in the land down under. Major releases, such as Grand Theft Auto, God of War, and Mortal Kombat have famously run afoul of the country’s more conservative politicians.

Today, that comes to an end.

Well, not today , but legislation has passed that will go into effect on January 1, 2013, adding an R18+ rating to the system, in which such violent or otherwise objectionable games may be categorized, allowing them to be released with a restriction on who may buy them, rather than simply being outright banned.

The decision comes on the end of years of struggle against a board not so much divided as held back by a single individual, who stood against those willing to accept video games as something adults might enjoy as much as children. Congratulations, Australia. It’s about damn time.
