Batman: the Caped Crusader, is one of the first Batman games to ever come out. Developed by Oceansoftware and released in 1988 on the Amgia, this arcade adventure game had a different style than most. Made to look like a comic book on the screen for certain 2D sections and a 3D isometric scene for longer stretches of gameplay. As usual with the Dark Knight, the player uses punches, kicks, and the world-famous Batarang to advance the levels.
Upon release, the game saw many positive reviews, citing its colorful and interesting gameplay design, as well as its various puzzles, which kept the players on their toes.
Batman: Caped Crusader Premise
The game is split into two parts. One being the “Bird in the Hand,” and the other being “A Fete Worse than Death.” The former involves Batman taking on the Penguin, while the latter involves a plot to stop the Joker.
The Penguin-centric story sees the titular criminal trying to take over the world with an army of robotic penguins. Sure, it’s a bit silly, but keep in mind, that these penguins have explosives, they’re small, and there’s an army of them. Not to mention, plenty of henchmen that stand between you and your goal.
The Joker-focused plot, however, sees the boy wonder, Robin, captured by the clown prince of crime. Batman must navigate Gotham’s complex sewer system and save him from a fate worse than death. Also, fete, in Spanish, means celebration. And the Joker has one in store for the young Dick Grayson. What could it be? Who knows? Not even the Joker. But one thing’s for sure, it certainly won’t be pretty.
Batman: Caped Crusader Main Characters
- Batman. The Caped Crusader, the Dark Knight. His real name may or may not be Bruce Wayne, the billionaire who was orphaned on one tragic night. Sworn to fight crime wherever it may be.
- The Penguin. Real name: Oswald Cobblepot. A longtime rival of the Waynes. Oswald has long since turned to crime. In this game, he aims to take over the world with an army of robotic penguins! To be fair, it would probably work.
- The Joker. His real name is unknown, and his backstory is a myth, his life, however, consists solely of making people smile. This time, he kidnaps Robin and makes Batman track him down to Gotham’s sewers. Swell. He’s also planted ten bombs all around them, just to make matters more interesting.

Sadly, there aren’t any cheats this writer could find. So instead, let’s cover some tips and tricks!
- Don’t beat yourself up for getting lost. In this comic book-style adventure, getting lost is all too easy, so take the time to breathe if you wind up backtracking a lot.
- Floor food gives you health! In an interesting twist, Batman is a kleptomaniac (not really) this time around, but what’s more, collecting various items off the ground can replenish health and various gadgets. So, be sure to collect whatever you can, when you can.
- Small screens, small problems. When it comes to taking on general enemies, be sure to take them on on the small screen. This will make it easier to control and defeat them, as they will be more clustered together. As opposed to a large screen, which will spread them apart.
- Return and Renew. Adding onto the other two points, there is a way to get more items and health pickups. Walk two screens away and return and the henchmen will return and you can kill him for more food. Do this until you have all your inventory filled.
