Pokemon Black Version 2 is a 2012 RPG developed by Game Freak, and published by The Pokemon Company and Nintendo. As a sequel to Pokemon Black, it completed Generation V of the Pokemon franchise, alongside the release of Pokemon White Version 2. While an additional third release for every Generation was (and is) common, this remains the first and only time that Game Freak released a numbered sequel to the previous titles.
While Pokemon Black Version 2 was first released for Nintendo DS, players on the DSi and the 3DS saw additional benefits from playing on the newer devices.
Pokemon Black Version 2 Premise
If you’ve ever played a Pokemon game at any point in your life, you’ve got a pretty strong idea about what you can expect to find in Pokemon Black Version 2. While playing the game, you’re going to be catching Pokemon, and leveling them up in battles against other trainers in order to challenge for a series of gym badges, before eventually challenging the Elite Four to secure your place as a Pokemon Master.
That said, Pokemon Black Version 2 still has plenty to offer in the way of new features. One of the biggest additions was Challenge Mode and Easy Mode, which offers a layer of difficulty adjustment for the first time in the franchise’s history. It also brings back several legendaries from past games, which hadn’t ever happened before. As well as this, the Memory Link was introduced, which allows you to take a look into several flashbacks that reveal exactly what happened between Pokemon Black and Pokemon Black Version 2.
Importantly, the world of Pokemon Black Version 2 is massively expanded over the original game. While both are set in the Unova region, the sequel adds locations such as Aspertia City, Virbank City, Floccesy Town, Lentimas Town, and Humilau City. This is explained in lore by the game canonically being two years later than the original.
Pokemon Black Version 2 Main Characters
With Pokemon Black Version 2 following the traditional story structure of the Pokemon games, you’ll meet the same types of characters following similar narrative beats along the way. Here are the important characters that Pokemon Black Version 2 has to offer:
- Nate / Rosa: Nate or Rosa are the male and female protagonists of Pokemon Black Version 2, depending on your choice at the start of the game. Hailing from the town of Aspertia City, Nate or Rosa embark on the traditional journey to become a Pokemon Master, culminating in the Elite Four battle at the end of the game. Regardless of which of Nate or Rosa you choose, you can encounter the other in Nimbasa City as an NPC, and will fight alongside you in a Multi Battle versus Emmet and Ingo.
- Hugh: Hugh is the rival Pokemon trainer featured in Pokemon Black Version 2. Traditionally, the rival is looking to become a Pokemon Master just like yourself, but Hugh is unique in this regard. Instead, Hugh aims to find a Pokemon which was stolen by Team Plasma, and he’ll check in with you periodically during the story to see how you’re both growing as trainers.
- Bianca: Bianca is a returning character from Pokemon Black and White. After being a rival in the original games, she now works as an Assistant Pokemon Professor to Professor Juniper. Bianca gives you your starter Pokemon, and pops up throughout the game in important moments. During your first visit to Reversal Mountain, she’ll even accompany you as a partner!
Pokemon Black Version 2 Titles in the Series
Pokemon Black Version 2 is the final title in Generation V of the long-running series. Crucially, it was the last game to use the 2D sprite art style, before Generation VI moved to the 3D era. In a way, Pokemon Black Version 2 was a transitional title in this regard, a final goodbye to an important phase of the series.
Whether it’s 2D or 3D, the Pokemon franchise continues to endure as one of the most popular in gaming history. Now up to Generation IX, Game Freak and The Pokemon Company continue to produce top-quality titles by slowly iterating on the established formula. Fans continue to love it, so why change it? As well as the mainline titles, there are still frequent spinoffs set in the Pokemon world, which allow developers to experiment with new and interesting concepts in this established world.
With all of this in mind, it’s hard to imagine Pokemon‘s status as a pop culture monolith is going anywhere any time soon.

Pokemon Black Version 2 Cheat Code FAQs
How Do You Use Cheats in Pokemon Black Version 2 on DeSmuME?
If you’re using the DeSmuME emulator, you might be struggling to find the cheat code feature. Not to worry – we can direct you to the right place.
First, open up the emulator and open up your Pokemon Black Version 2 ROM. Then, head to the “Tools” subsection of DeSmuME, then “Cheats”, and click “List.”
Copy the cheat code you’re wanting to use in-game, and press the button that says “Action Replay” within the emulator’s cheat list. Paste the cheat code into the appropriate box, as well as a description if you’d like, and click “Add.” Now your Pokemon Black Version 2 cheat codes are enabled on DeSmuME!
What is the healing item cheat in Pokemon Black Version 2?
If you managed to miss it in our previous list, we’re on hand to help. The cheat to get 999 of every healing item in Pokemon Black Version 2 is as follows:

However, this removes the challenge from the game entirely, so beware when using this cheat code.
