Battlefield 3 Might Require An Online Pass

None

Many titles now require an online pass to grant access to its multiplayer, and it looks like EA’s upcoming Battlefield 3 won’t be any different. This strategy was enforced to combat the ever-growing used game market, where companies actually lose money since they don’t see a dime from trade-in copies of their games. In an economy like this, many gamers would rather save a couple bucks on a used copy as opposed to purchasing a full-priced new game.

There’s been quite a bit of confusion about whether or not Battlefield 3 will require an online pass. Executive Producer Patrick Bach said in a recent interview with GamerZines that the game would “probably” require a pass but wouldn’t confirm on the subject. Previous games in the Battlefield series haven’t required any codes to access their multiplayer, but with the increased efforts from publishers including EA to fight used game sales by motivating gamers to purchase new games, a change for Battlefield 3 wouldn’t be surprising.

Also announced today was EA’s Sports Season Ticket, a new program that charges an annual $25 to give players access to digital versions of their games three days before their retail release. Right now the program’s limited to five of EA’s sports series, including NHL, FIFA, Tiger Woods PGA Tour, and NCAA Football. But such a program could potentially work for Battlefield 3 as well.
