Bungie Believes Destiny Can Rival Pop-Culture Milestones such as Star Wars

Bungie Believes Destiny Can Rival Pop-Culture Milestones such as Star Wars

Developing any sort of MMO—or “persistent online world,” as so many developers have colorfully dubbed it—demands a level of grandeur: the scope and lore of the world must be deep and engaging enough to keep players interested throughout their presumably lengthy experience. It then comes as no surprise that Bungie, the mind behind the interwoven narrative of Halo, has taken to the genre for its monumental next-gen IP, Destiny.

Gamesindustry International’s recent interview with COO Pete Parsons confirmed the studio’s grand expectations and then some.  “We like to tell big stories,” he said, “And we want people to put the Destiny universe on the same shelf they put Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, or Star Wars; we’ve already seen them do that with Halo.” Comparing the two shooters, Parsons continued, saying, “We were extremely proud of what we achieved with Halo… I’m pretty convinced we are going to do it again with Destiny in a way that maybe even Halo never achieved before.”   “We’ve always admired people like Pixar, and we are finally in that moment where we have this raw, amazing talent that I think rivals entertainment creators across any entertainment ever, and Activision is helping us bring that reality to life,” Parsons said.

Bungie’s enthusiastic approach to developing for the MMO genre is refreshing to see, and their track record lends credence to the studio’s ability to make good on its daunting intentions. Let’s just hope there’s more than big talk behind its big stories.
