Don’t listen to people who try to tell you every Call of Duty game is the same, only with different sepia filters. They’re not. Each game has its own nuance, aesthetic, and story that makes it special. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was one of the best in the series. It kicked off the popular Modern Warfare line, taking us away from World War II, and it featured robust solo and multiplayer campaigns.
Which is why the leaked Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is such wonderful news. If any Call of Duty game deserves an HD remake, it’s this one. This game did so many things right, introducing new storylines and elements to the series. At almost nine years old, it deserves a chance to come back again. This was one of the first entries in the series to take advantage of what the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 could do. It should get another chance to amaze people.
The campaign does a wonderful job of telling a story set in the Middle East in 2011. We don’t see the story from one character’s eyes, but many since our perspective goes between soldiers on each mission. And what missions they are. You aren’t always doing the same thing in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Sometimes you’re trying to wipe out opponents, while other missions send you to a certain place. You may need to defend someplace, protect someone, or sabotage an enemy installment. There’s so much variety.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare’ s multiplayer is revolutionary as well. You have multiple maps where you can’t barrel through to win. You have to really think things through and work with your teammates. You’re also rewarded for your killstreaks, which allow you to summon some sort of special attack to the field. Experience is doled out for winning, giving you new perks to equip, challenges to take, and weapons to use. This may all seem like old hat now, but this game is where it all began.
There’s another reason this Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare remaster is such a good idea. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is going to be a futuristic installment. Outer space battles have been hinted at. This has left some feeling a little disappointed, since it’s such a drastic shift in tone. By releasing a remaster of one of the best entries in the series, one that’s more traditional, everyone’s covered. People who want the comforting classic have it, while those ready to experiment get something different.
It’s easy to hate on both remasters and the Call of Duty series. Some like to accuse both of laziness, even when it isn’t true. With Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare , enough time has passed that it would be vastly improved when remastered. Plus, it’s one of the best entries and should be reexperienced. Besides, it’ll give people who might not have been interested in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare to enjoy this year. This is a can’t-lose situation!
