Will Modern Warfare Save Call of Duty?

Will Modern Warfare Save Call of Duty?

The new Call of Duty is on the way, and it is bringing a classic back. Modern Warfare returns, following the love fest people showed for Modern Warfare Remastered . A big part of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is its dedication to its characters. This is important in a series where the last installment didn’t have a storyline. Keeping defined characters following a cohesive tale that keeps carrying on is one of the reasons this line was so beloved, and bringing that back with a new installment is just what people might need.

Sergeant John “Soap” MacTavish became someone to rally behind. We watched him start out with the 22nd SAS Regiment and become involved in missions with worldwide consequences. We saw his actions lead to a promotion, making him the Task Force 141 captain for Modern Warfare 2 . We saw his dedication to his cause and the people around him. We connected with the character and his struggle to fight terrorism.

What was also important about the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare games is how their storylines didn’t just show us one perspective. We were constantly seeing what other people and members of the military are doing when critical missions are going down. For example, in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare , you step into the shoes of people like Soap, Sergeant Paul Jackson and Captain John Price to gain a greater perspective. In Modern Warfare 2, Soap returns a playable character, and Sergeant Gary “Roach” Sanderson, Joseph Allen, and James Ramirez appear. For the third entry, Soap was back, but your focus was on characters like Yuri and Frost.

Also critical was the ability to rally against a strong villainous group throughout the series. We watched this Ultranationalist terrorist cell grow. We saw its beginnings in the first Modern Warfare , where Imran Zakhaev kicked off heinous acts. We saw how his protege, Vladimir Makarov, went on to found Inner Circle and take part in even greater atrocities in the second and third games. This hatred of them and their acts brewed over multiple games. We knew we had a job to finish and we had to help Soap, Roach, Yuri, and the other characters to fight back against such evil acts.

Will Modern Warfare Save Call of Duty?

These things allowed a sense of connection and perspective. We saw each game from multiple angles, which better allowed us to understand the conflicts. It might also give us a different way to approach situation and appreciate different sorts of soldiers’ skillsets. We had these constant ties to bind them together and keep this Call of Duty line strong. It gave us something to look forward to.

All of these reasons are why a new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a best case scenario. This gives people a chance to experience or reexperience a strong story. We have familiar faces to root for. We know there will be opportunities to see different sides of the stories. There will be the sort of motivation that people might not have felt from an installment like Black Ops 4, which only offered multiplayer options. It’s a new sort of hope.
