Can EA MMA Survive Without A License?

None

When EA Sports MMA first came out, it was supposed to be the grand answer to the monopoly UFC Undisputed had on the MMA game genre. To compete, EA used competing fight series Strikeforce as the main attraction and roster in their game. Then the UFC bought out Strikeforce… Oops.

Most of us thought that this meant a total end to the EA Sports MMA line, as all Strikeforce fighters have now been consumed by the UFC and thus would be involved in THQ’s production of UFC Undisputed. This is further complicated by the fact that UFC president Dana White has publicly rebuked EA Sports and said that the UFC would never do business with it. So what happens to EA MMA now?

Well, according to EA Sports’ chief of development Andrew Wilson, a sequel isn’t in development, but they aren’t counting the franchise as dead just yet. Wilson is apparently a big fan of MMA himself, and does not want to give up making MMA games. “A world where we’re not involved in fighting is a world I’d rather not think about,” Wilson said in a statement to Kotaku. “That said, what goes on in the sport, and what’s gone on between the UFC and Strikeforce, certainly has an impact on what we can do in the space.”

When asked directly whether or not a sequel could be made he said “it’s not a ‘no’, but it’s also not a ‘yes’. We’d love for there to be one because I’m a diehard fan of the sport. We just have to figure out how to make it happen.”
