Capcom Rethinks 3DS Save-Locking

In a July 1 interview, Capcom’s Christian Svensson offered some relieving news. Regarding the already-infamous permanent save system in Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, Svensson said, “I don’t think we’re going to see something like this happening again.” He cited the community response to and the controversy over the save system, which prevents one from deleting or resetting one’s save file, as the reasoning behind his expectations.

Svensson also stuck to Capcom’s official stance that the save system was not a measure taken to discourage used game sales, stating that, “I really can’t say more than we’ve said publicly. I think it’s fair to say that there was never quite the malicious intent that the conspiracy theorists would have you believe.”

This marks the second time in as many months that community backlash has led to a quick, conciliatory response from Capcom. When the PC version of Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition was slated to require a constant internet connection to access most of the game’s content, fans condemned it as draconian and unnecessary. Capcom subsequently decided that a patch, upon release, would remove the online requirement from the title.
