Capcom Ambivalent About Always-On DRM

Capcom Ambivalent About Always-On DRM

None

The PlayStation 3 version of Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 drew a lot of attention around its release earlier this year when it was revealed that the game would take advantage of a form of DRM built into the PSN. The DRM was network dependent, meaning that one had to be signed onto one’s PSN account in order to play the game at all.

According to Capcom’s U.S. vice president, Christian Svensson, it was “really as much as an experiment as anything else, to see what the impact was.”

In comments made to Eurogamer earlier today, Svennson revealed that and that the results have been, “Inconclusive, frankly. As far as we can tell, it neither helped nor hindered us.”

He asserts that the necessity of such DRM will continue to be assessed on a case-by-case basis, but it’s worth noting that Street Fighter 3: Third Strike Online didn’t include it.
