CD Projekt’s Cyberpunk Journey

CD Projekt’s Cyberpunk Journey

None

We knew it was coming. Weeks ago, we’d seen the job listings on the CD Projekt website , then were teased with promises of a major announcement by the developers themselves. Yesterday, CD Projekt RED confirmed that, during their summer developer’s conference, they would be unveiling their new IP .

Turns out we were off by a few decades, though. While we’d suspected that the developer was making something more modern, a contemporary RPG with guns and tasers rather than swords and sorcery, we hadn’t predicted that the latest CD Projekt RED production would be a video game interpretation of Cyberpunk, Mike Pondsmith’s most famous Pen & Paper game (you remember those, right?). And, yes, this game does have Mike Pondsmith’s support. He was at the aforementioned conference during the reveal.

There’s tremendous potential here for CD Projekt to do something truly excellent. Their previous games have already delved into the moral grey areas of fantasy, and since cyberpunk as a genre is almost entirely predicated on these sorts of ethical vagaries, it seems like a natural fit for the developer’s writing acumen. This could also force them to stretch their gameplay design muscles to make an experience that accommodates the extreme versatility of cyberpunk combat.
