CES 2012: Kinect Heading To Windows

None

The Consumer Electronics Show isn’t typically where developers choose to make big video game related announcements. Usually, electronics companies like Panasonic and Sony waste their press conferences on things like laptops or audio equipment. But this year, we’re seeing a surge in gaming news coming out of the show.

Microsoft, for instance, announced yesterday that they will be bringing the Kinect to Windows machines on February 1. The news was delivered by American Idol host and dreamboat Ryan Seacrest, who was backed by a gospel choir that would belt out Microsoft-related tweets.

It was less funny than I make it sound.

Seacrest, and Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s CEO, also revealed that the developer has shipped over 18 million Kinects so far. But they didn’t reveal if the Xbox 360 Kinects and the Windows Kinects would be interchangeable. Though, I highly doubt they are, because Amazon is currently listing a Kinect Sensor for Windows at $249.99. Whereas the Xbox edition is a scant $119.00.

I can’t imagine that the hardware is much different between the two. So, I’m hoping that Amazon’s pricing is simply wrong. We’ll have to wait and see.
