Confirmed: Almost No Backwards Compatibility Without 360 Hard Drive

None

We had suggested earlier that the Xbox 360 core bundle would not support backwards compatibility and, sadly, we were right. Well, mostly right.

According to Microsoft, older current-gen games will not run without an emulator on the 360’s hard drive (no word yet if this emulator will come with the hard drive). This obviously means no hard drive, no backwards compatibility.

Developers that are currently working on Xbox games are being encouraged to include the emulation software on the discs meaning the hard drive will not be necessary for those games. Yet, because a Microsoft emulation expert must be assigned to assist developers in offering backwards compatibility, emulation software will only be available on key Xbox games that have just recently gone into development.

We’ll keep you posted as we continue to hear more.
