CyberConnect2 Hints At .hack’s Future

CyberConnect2 Hints At .hack’s Future

A rare RPG designed to be released in multiple parts, the .hack series took place inside a fictional MMO that presented a very real threat to its players. Serving as something of a commentary on modern gaming, the .hack games were accompanied by various other media, such as anime and books, and saw an eventual sequel in .hack//G.U. The most recent release was a fighting game, which accompanied the Blu-ray release of the latest movie in the franchise, CyberConnect2 may have since moved on to Naruto games, but its CEO, Hiroshi Matsuyama, recently commented on the future of the franchise at a release event for the .hack “Light Edition” art books.

In addition to Guilty Dragon, a mobile phone release set in the .hack universe, Matsuyama noted that there has been “desire for a PS Vita remake or for HD remakes on PS3 or PS4 of the .hack series.” He qualifies that developing an original series for home consoles is a challenge, right now, “But, that doesn’t mean we aren’t preparing anything.”

When told, in light of stable Guilty Dragon sales, that he should do something with .hack, he said, “There might be something! I’m preparing for when I’m able to develop something properly.”

It would be interesting to see how a .hack game would turn out with today’s hardware and design principles behind it, no?
