Xbox One players are likely immune to these types of headlines at this point. As someone who owns and loves my Wii U, I understand that you have to develop some thick skin to deal with power and capability comparisons. This time, the focus is FromSoftware’s latest masterpiece, Dark Souls III . The game is already out in Japan, and review copies are floating around. We know how well the game runs, and how well it doesn’t run. If you’re planning to play Dark Souls III on your PS4, then you’re in good shape. Expect the gorgeous world of Lothric and its inhabitants to destroy you in 1080p, at a consistent 30 fps.
The Xbox One version of the game is a little more finicky. Digital Foundry played the two versions side-by-side to compare performance and the Xbox One, while still enjoyable, is clearly inferior. Even at a reduced resolution of 900p, the frame rate struggles to maintain a consistent 30 fps, often dipping down to 25 and below. One early review on NeoGAF went as far as to say that he felt like he was playing the game in slow-motion during some boss battles. Hopefully, FromSoftware will continue to release patches that improve performance post-launch, but in the meantime, this is a game best experienced on the PS4 if you have that option.
