Did Sony Shrink Its Security Before The Breach?

Did Sony Shrink Its Security Before The Breach?

None

Among the lawsuits entertainment giant Sony is dealing with in the wake of April’s security breach and subsequent outage is one alleging that the company laid off network security staff in the weeks leading up to the breach. Furthermore, it claims that the company ignored smaller-scale intrusions that demonstrated the system’s security holes.

If this is true, Sony may be in breach of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act for not properly securing customer information. In support of its case, the suit also makes use of half-a-dozen former Sony Computer Entertainment America and Sony Online Entertainment employees, citing them as confidential witnesses. Many of these witnesses were employees until March of this year, making it more likely that information they have on Sony’s measures and practices is up-to-date.

The suit is being brought by three Sony customers, two of them PSN members at the time of the April security breach. The third, a member of the Sony Pictures’ website, had his personal information made public when LulzSec hacked that website earlier this month.
