Disney has been pumping out some amazing movies lately. You know what I’m talking about. Titles like Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen became instant classics. Do you know how many Annas and Elsas I saw on Halloween? We’re talking double digits. Judging by the promos and advance hype, it’s looking like Big Hero 6 will attempt to continue that trend. These are quality features.
Which is a shame they can’t get exceptional games to go with them. The best game Wreck-It Ralph game was a mobile adaptation with mini-games based on the various elements from the film, and a similar thing happened with Frozen and Frozen Free Fall . They’re fun, but they’re far from the quality adventures you’d expect a good movie to spawn.
We need more, quality Disney games. I look at the titles children are getting, and I pity them. Truly, those of us who grew up with the NES, SNES, and Genesis were the greatest generation. Our animated feature films and cartoon shows had the finest games to go with them. We were the ones who savored games like Aladdin , Rescue Rangers , DuckTales , and Lion King . Even the ones that leaned towards the impossible, like the adaptation for Beauty and the Beast that wasn’t Belle’s Quest , were treasured.
It’s a shame that Disney isn’t taking the opportunity to recreate those glory days with Wreck-It Ralph , Frozen , and Big Hero 6 . Especially given the number of amazing developers out there who are capable of quality 2D games. WayForward or DreamRift would be perfect candidates for capturing that feeling. Both have already done that with Disney games, with DuckTales: Remastered and Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion .
Especially since we know Disney is capable of releasing or having its properties tied to good video games. Disney Infinity has proven quite popular, with Disney Infinity 2.0 offering even more variety for players. Disney Magical World offered people an Animal Crossing -opportunity mixed with iconic characters. The Disney Epic Mickey series had its moments too. This success should be able to transition over.
It’s a lamentable situation. Movies like Wreck-It Ralph , Frozen , and Big Hero 6 have such potential. Throwback games that call to mind the great Disney games of lore would be appreciated by children and adults alike. Especially since the more recent releases have been so readily accepted by movie goers of all ages. There have been good, even great Disney games released recently. We know it’s possible to have games that do the source material justice. One can only hope movies will get games that mirror their glory again.
