The Gabriel Knight Mystery series is a well-known franchise. It includes both video games, like the one this article is about, as well as novels. The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery is one such title. It is a point-and-click adventure game, using Full Motion Video. For those not in the know, Full Motion Video uses live-action film to showcase the game. I.E., the characters on screen are not digital, they are filmed actors carrying out your actions and choices. Some of your choices will continue the story, but others might end it prematurely. So be careful!

First released back in 1995, developed and published by Sierra Online, this horror game saw great reviews upon release. It was the fourth best-selling PC game of January 1996 (and keep in mind, back then, most games were on the PC). It was also developed into a novel.
The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery Premise
Acclaimed horror novelist, Gabriel Knight, has taken over his Schloss Ritter Family residence in in Rittersber, Germany. It is a castle, so, Gabriel has plenty of time to write. Especially after his last book sold so well. That said, there is one problem that has been weighing on him. As the latest Schattenjäger, or Shadow Hunter, Gabriel must combat supernatural evils. He would much rather write his novels, but one night, the locals asked him to investigate a mysterious death.
Once he gets to the scene of the crime, which takes him to Munich. He finds a grisly sight. The body appears to have been killed by a wolf that appears to have escaped from the local zoo. But, Gabriel believes differently. It is wolf-like, to be certain. But it was done by something larger, taller. The more he investigates, the more he is certain. Eventually, he is taken to a manor owned by one Baron Friedrich Von Glower, who values Gabriel and the bloodline he comes from.

The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery Main Characters
- Gabriel Knight. The titular character. A writer, a loner, a shadow hunter with a chip on his shoulder. He’s a jerk, but the kind that can be trusted to do the right thing in the end.
- Grace Nakimura. Gabriel’s assistant likely deserves a raise after everything she’s gone through. She’s often kidnapped, but who knows? Maybe this time around, she’ll hold her own.
- Gerde Hull. A maid, but there’s more to this employee that meets the eye. Still suffering after the loss of her lover, Wolfgang, in the previous game, Gerde chooses to interact more with the cast.
- Baron Friedrich von Glower. A recurring villain to Gabriel, and is disdainful of concepts like good or evil. He’s involved to some degree, but how much?
- Baron Garr von Zell. An owner of a hunting lodge. He loves to hunt, perhaps, indeed, a bit too much.
- Herr Doktor Stephan Klingmann. A doctor working for Garr von Zell, he does not like it when people are too casual with him.
- Kriminalkommissar Leber. A police officer who assists Gabriel during the course of the investigation.
