Fans Campaign To Change Mass Effect 3’s Ending

None

I won’t spoil anything, but Mass Effect 3’s ending provides a sobering look at the realities of war and the eternal struggle that we all fight against the natural entropy of the universe.

Of course, fans hated it. In fact, they hated it so much that they are starting up a petition that asks BioWare to release some sort of DLC to change the ending into a more simple “everyone lives happily ever after” type of conclusion. The petition already has 20,000 signatures, which is impressive considering similar petitions to resurrect some classic game franchises have only received a fraction of those votes.

Some fans thought that they were getting the “bad ending” because they didn’t play any multiplayer, but BioWare made it absolutely clear that you do not need to play multiplayer to get the best ending. By maxing out your Effective Military Strength, you will exceed the threshold for the good ending, even if your “Galactic Readiness,” a statistic that raises via multiplayer, stays at its base. That depressing ending (which once again I will not spoil) was put there by BioWare on purpose. You aren’t missing anything.

Frankly, I’m not sure that BioWare should listen to their fans in this case. Yes, fan opinions matter because fan opinions sell games, but the ending of Mass Effect 3 as it stands now is pretty damn great. Cheapening it just because it makes people feel uneasy defeats the entire purpose of the ending in the first place. That feeling of sadness and futility? That’s what war feels like. BioWare did a magnificent job of translating that and really making the emotional weight of the ending hit the player.
