Free-To-Play Is The New Cash Cow

Free-To-Play Is The New Cash Cow

None

To the layman, the term Free-to-Play doesn’t actually sound like a good business strategy. I mean, how much money can you make off of something that is free, right? But as it turns out, you can make quite a bit

A recent market report from NewZoo shows that U.S. gamers are spending way more on free-to-play MMOs than they used to, 24 percent more than last year actually. At this point $1.2 billion dollars is expected to be spent on free to play MMOs in 2011. That’s 47 percent of the total MMO market. Eat that, World of Warcraft!

That’s just in the U.S.; free-to-play MMOs are actually doing far better in other parts of the world. In Europe, they account for 53 percent of the MMO market, 51 percent in Asia, and a whopping 59 percent in “other emerging countries.” In addition, the report also said that 84% of all U.S. MMO gamers play a browser-based MMO, while half of those gamers also play a client-based MMO. And yes, that means they are probably spending money on both of them.

Perhaps free-to-play MMOs are the wave of the future. It’s certainly something to think about between ten-hour World of Warcraft binge sessions.
