Gamers Hit With Actual Criminal Charges for Cheating Online

What do you think will happen if you are caught cheating? Maybe you’ll get banned from a server? Maybe you’ll have your Xbox Live account shut down? Maybe, at worst, you’ll end up getting your actual IP banned from all online services by a company, and that’s only if you are a really toxic player. Well, in Japan things have escalated quite a bit. Now, some gamers are getting actual charges pressed against them for cheating.

Online gaming company Nexon, publisher of a lot of free to play shooters, strategy games, and more, are pressing charges against three gamers for obstruction of business. These gamers were using cheat programs to cheat in online FPS Sudden Attack , and also distributing cheat methods to other players. According to Nexon, the use of these cheats hurt the game, as well as other players using the game. Since the online FPS is, in a sense, a business, this lead to the obstruction of business charges. This marks the first time that gamers have been held criminally liable for their actions in an online game.
