Gamescom 2011: Blizzard Serious About Putting Diablo III On Consoles

None

How serious is Blizzard about a console version of Diablo III? According to their press conference at Gamescom, very serious. Lead designer Josh Mosqueira has stated it to be one of the team’s major goals. This is an interesting development in the tumultuous relationship between consoles and action-RPG dungeon crawlers that stretches back to the original PlayStation.

Without beating around the bush, there was a PlayStation version of the original Diablo. After that little experiment, the series went PC-only for its next entry, and dungeon crawlers in its vein followed suit. There have been some console titles that have drawn on it for inspiration, such as the X-Men Legends and Marvel Ultimate Alliance series, but, save for a recent port of Torchlight to the Xbox Live Arcade, traditional dungeon crawlers have been more or less exclusive to the PC.

Blizzard, however, is clearly taking steps toward bridging the gap. They’ve declared that they’re serious about it, and even the PC version is being limited in certain ways, such as its six-quick-skill cap, that point toward a friendly configuration for a console controller.
