GameStop Prepares For Game Streaming

GameStop Prepares For Game Streaming

None

GameStop is preparing to offer a service that will offer streaming games, much like OnLive. Instead of running the game on your own console, you will be able to run the game from a remote server on devices such as Internet-enabled TVs, as well as tablets and other mobile devices.

However, where OnLive and GameStop’s new service differ is that GameStop is offering this in addition to their already existing retail service. So you can purchase a hard copy of the game, then you can play it on the road so you don’t have to lug your console around with you. Of course, this means you actually have to own the console and buy the game in the first place if you want to be able to play your cloud copy. GameStop isn’t offering this service for free; you will actually have to purchase it in addition to your retail copy of the game.

The company plans to release this service in August of 2012, earlier than we thought. They also plan to offer demos for consoles games, and “stream as you install” play for PC games. Even better, developers and publishers don’t have to do anything to get their game on GameStop’s service. That can all be handled on GameStop’s end.

I may have disagreed with several of GameStop’s policies in the past, but this seems like a huge leap forward for digital distribution. Good on ya, GameStop. Good on ya!
