Halo 5 is one of the Xbox One’s best games, but it feels like it isn’t getting the sort of accolades it deserves online. It’s often overshadowed by multiplayer properties like Call of Duty and GTA Online . But Halo 5 deserves more props for what it is and what it does, especially with its Forge. Halo 5’ s Forge is capable of incredible things, and people should be paying more attention.
Forge is a set of creation tools for the game. If someone hops into the Forge in Halo 5 , they can do many amazing things with the map editor. Though, referring to it as such doesn’t do it justice. This is more than a map editor. It lets you customize and create different game types with basic building blocks that allow for detailed encounters.
The array of available options is already impressive. There’s a Halo 5 Forge Pokemon battle map and game type by CaptainDireWolf. Omni42 made a Primus map, a level inspired by Metroid Prime . You can play a Mongoose Sumo mini-game made by Turbtastic, which was actually highlighted on the Halo Waypoint . If you search for Bearskopff in the Forge, you’ll find maps recreating the Battle of Hoth, complete with AT-AT, the Millennium Falcon, and Princess Peach’s castle from Super Mario 64. It’s amazing. Most recently, the Clogged Toilet mod series came back .
But it’s only the beginning. Halo 5’ s Forge will be coming to Windows 10 PCs this year. Think about what people have done with the Forge so far. Now remember this is being done on their Xbox Ones. These have less than optimal control schemes, since you have to use a controller. The PC version will allow you to use a keyboard and mouse. It’ll have more testing options. Yet, all creations will still work on the Xbox One. It’s extraordinary.
Halo 5’ s Forge is revolutionary. It’s been continuing the traditions set in place by previous installments’ Forges and giving us the best tools to use when creating new modes to enjoy and places to be. There’s such a sense of variety. It makes the game stand out even more than it already did, and more people should be appreciating and using it to make incredible things. Perhaps once the Windows 10 Forge is opened, we’ll see it get the attention it finally deserves from everyone, even if they don’t own a console.
