James Gunn Says Avengers/Guardians Crossover Still Undecided

Guardians of the Galaxy was a surprise hit over the summer, proving Marvel Studios could seemingly release a film about a flying phone book with superpowers and it would likely sell tickets. Some are still wondering if/when this rag-tag group of heroes will ever cross paths with our Avengers on Earth!

James Gunn made several comments to the press that have muddied the waters a bit, causing fan speculation to swirl out of control. In an attempt to tamp down some of this insanity, he recently took to his Facebook page to clarify a few things. One primary reason future crossover plans are too early to call at this point is because they’ve not yet been completely hashed out. “When I’m asked about the Guardians and their future, and whether they’ll meet up with the Avengers I really don’t have all that much to say, because some of it isn’t decided yet, and I don’t want to give away what is decided…” explains Gunn.

However, he did reveal the early talks of where the Guardians sequel will go from here have already occurred. All his ideas thus far have been well received by Marvel’s President, Kevin Feige, as for the moment Gunn states it’s best to “…keep huge chunks of the Guardians separate from the Marvel heroes of earth, because they have a whole galaxy to explore. We wanted to use them as a way to make the MCU bigger, not smaller. We wanted to make sure they have their own mythos, as opposed to only one that is intertwined with the earthbound characters. They ARE connected, of course, but that connection would not be the purpose of their stories…”

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will hit theaters in May of 2017.
