Kinect SDK: It’s Out There

Kinect SDK: It’s Out There

None

Do you have any interest in Kinect development? If so, you’ll be happy to learn that Microsoft has released an official non-commercial software development kit for its astonishingly versatile Kinect sensor.

Though Kinect development has been happening PC-side almost since the device’s initial release, all of that has been done using unofficial tools pieced together by an ardent and ambitious modding community. This move on Microsoft’s part is almost an applause of their efforts, having been previously announced by the company to be a result of the support the Kinect has received from said community.

Though Microsoft is encouraging homebrew development for the Kinect, they have also been very clear that this is a non-commercial SDK, meaning developers will not be allowed to sell anything they make while using it. It’s intended more for academic and enthusiast purposes.

For those interested in the Kinect SDK, it can be downloaded for free at the Microsoft Research website. The SDK includes over 100 pages of documentation and some sample code to help neophytes get their feet wet in Kinect development.
